2 Battles in the Pit
A tamer battle is three pets against three. One pet from each side fights at the front, and the others wait on the back line.
Each round, you choose one thing for your front pet:
- A move. Every pet has three moves, including its own signature move. Rest your mouse on a move to see what it does.
- Swap. Send in a pet from your back line. Handy when you're up against a family that beats yours.
- Pass. Do nothing this round.
The faster pet usually goes first. Knock out all three of the other side's pets to win. On the Fight tab you can choose an Easy, Normal or Hard opponent.
Now and then a big hit also splashes onto a pet waiting on the back line. Splash never knocks a waiting pet out.
Long fights. Most fights are over in about 15 rounds. If one reaches round 20, the pets get tired and all healing is halved. From round 30 there's no healing at all, so every fight ends.
Rare powers. A few pets have a special power as well as their moves. Gravewick can Rise Again: once per fight, two rounds after being knocked out, it gets back up with a quarter of its health, as long as one of its teammates is still standing.
3 Families and matchups
Every pet belongs to one of 12 families. Each family beats two others and is beaten by two others.
- Moves marked โฒ Strong hit the pet in front of you 1.5 times as hard.
- Moves marked โผ Weak do about a third less.
- From level 30, every pet also becomes strong against one more family, and gets better at it all the way to level 40.
Every family also has a family gift, a special trick that's always on. See which pets belong to each family in the Pet Guide.
4 Ground, weather and moons
Where and when you fight changes the rules. Pets on ground they like hit 10% harder, and so do pets in weather they like. Check both before you pick your team.
Ground
Weather
Changing the weather
Every fight has one sky that both sides share. The game picks it when the fight starts. After that, only weather moves can change it:
- Some pets can call the weather: Tide pets bring rain, Wyrm a heatwave, Undead a storm, Spirit fog, Fae and Wing pets wind, and Frostmaw snow.
- A weather move changes the sky for both sides, for 3 rounds. Then the fight's own weather comes back. The weather chip at the top of the screen counts down the rounds.
- Using a weather move costs your turn, so choose: hit now, or set up the sky first.
The two moons
๐ The silver moonThis is the real Moon in tonight's sky. The fuller it is, the stronger Fae, Spirit and Tide pets fight, by up to 25% on a full moon.
๐ด The blood moonA rare red moon. While it's up, Wyrm, Fang and Undead pets hit 15% harder.
5 Taming wild pets
Pick Wild hunt on the Fight tab and head out into the wild: forest glades, desert dunes, frozen pines, misty bogs, old ruins, volcano slopes and an abandoned village. You'll meet one, two or three wild pets.
๐ฆ๏ธ Weather charms let you choose the weather for a hunt. On the Fight tab, choose Wild hunt, then pick a charm before you press Enter the Pit. Since weather decides which pets turn up most, a rain charm brings out Tide and Root pets, a fog charm brings out Spirit and Ooze, and so on. Each charm is used up when the hunt starts. Every new tamer gets a rain charm and a wind charm, and you find more by taming pets and winning tamer battles.
To tame a wild pet you fill its Bond meter, then throw your golden Tether.
Fills the Bond meter
- Coax: use your turn to calm it. Works best with a same-family pet, on ground it likes, or once it's tired.
- Fighting fair: every round with no knockout adds a little.
- Same family: a pet of the same family in front adds more each round.
- Ground it likes: hunting on its favourite ground adds more each round.
Scares it off
- One huge hit: hitting for a big share of its health in one go.
- Hitting it when it's Exhausted: do it twice and it runs away.
- A missed Tether: costs a little Bond.
Wild pets never get knocked out. When their health runs out they become Exhausted: stop attacking, Coax it, and throw the Tether. The fuller the Bond meter, the better your chance.
Quality: no two tamed pets are quite the same
ScrappySturdyFinePrimeMythic
Every wild pet has a quality. Scrappy pets are common and easy to bond. Prime and Mythic pets are rare, have better stats, need a much fuller Bond meter, and run away after a few rounds, so be quick. Each wild pet is also Swift, Tough or Hard-hitting, a little better at one thing.
